Die Abteilung für Film- und Fernsehkunst des Sapir College ist eine filmwissenschaftliche und filmpraktische Ausbildungsstätte, die in der heutigen Form erst wenige Jahre existiert. Sie befindet sich im Süden des Landes, an der Nordgrenze des Gaza-Streifens, und damit in einer Region, in der Juden nordafrikanischer Herkunft, Beduinen, russische und mittelasiatische Immigranten und Palästinenser in unmittelbarer Nachbarschaft zueinander leben. Diese Vielfalt der Kulturen ist jedoch vom kulturellen Leben des übrigen Landes weitgehend isoliert. Diesem Mißstand Abhilfe zu schaffen ist eine der Absichten, die hinter der Gründung des Departments stehen. Ein neues kulturelles Zentrum sollte die Künste aus den Metropolen in die von Entwicklungsstädten und Kibbuzim dominierte Peripherie bringen, eine Brücke schlagen zwischen den verschiedenen israelischen Communities und den Palästinensern in Gazasowie die Entwicklung regionaler Kulturen unterstützen.
Mit derselben Intention und praktisch zeitgleich wurde in der Nachbarstadt Sderot auch die Kinemathek des Südens gegründet, mit der das Sapir College intensiv zusammenarbeitet. Geplant war außerdem die Einrichtung einer Medienschule in Gaza, mit der eine enge Kooperation angestrebt wurde. Mit Beginn der 2. Intifada im Herbst 2000 wurde dieses Projekt jedoch abgebrochen. Besondere Berücksichtigung finden in der Ausbildung der künstlerisch-soziale Aspekt und die Auseinandersetzung mit dem 'Cinema South': mit Filmen aus Lateinamerika, Afrika, der sogenannten 'Dritten Welt', dem Exilfilm, aber auch dem unabhängigen israelischen Film. Dieser Begriff beerbt den von Solanas und Gettino geprägten Terminus 'Third Cinema', erweitert ihn aber zugleich: dem Süden als Inbegriff einer unterdrückten, marginalen und ökonomisch wie kulturell unerschlossenen Region wird die Vision eines ethnisch vielfältigen Territoriums gegenübergestellt, dessen kulturelles und politisches Potential sich auf dem Wege kultureller Produktion entfaltet. Das 'Cinema South' entwirft ein neues, selbstbewußtes Bild des “Südens” und sucht zugleich nach einer möglichen Zukunft in Frieden und Autonomie. Sapir ist – neben der Tel Aviv University – eine von zwei Hochschulen in Israel, die eine Filmausbildung mit akademischem Abschluß anbieten. Struktur und Inhalte der Ausbildung Die Filmausbildung in Sapir zielt nicht allein auf die fundierte wissenschaftliche und berufspraktische Ausbildung der Studierenden, sondern befaßt sich vor allem auch mit der gesellschaftlichen und politischen Relevanz der Medienberufe insgesamt. Entsprechend zentral ist im Rahmen der Ausbildung auch der inhaltliche Fokus auf sozialpolitische Fragestellungen: Jedes Semester steht im Zeichen eines Themas – wie etwa die ethnischen Gruppen im Süden Israels, Gesellschaft und Gewalt u. a. –, das von den Studierenden theoretisch behandelt und in praktischen Projekten umgesetzt wird. Die erste Generation von jungen Regisseuren, Kameraleuten, Drehbuchautoren und Filmtechnikern verläßt gerade nach dreijährigem Studium mit einem akademischen Titel das College. Als eigenständiges wissenschaftliches und praktisches Programm kann das Filmstudium sich auf eine Grundausbildung konzentrieren, in der sich filmtheoretische und filmhistorische Themen mit der konkreten Arbeit an Filmprojekten die Waage halten. Die Studierenden sind gehalten, sich in ihrer Arbeit auf die Region zu konzentrieren. Die Kurse sind aufgeteilt in Pflicht- und Wahlkurse, wobei die Studenten einen Überblick sowohl über die Geschichte, die Formen, die Filmsprache, die Film- und Fernsehpraxis als auch über alle relevanten technischen und praktischen Themen erhalten. Die Studenten arbeiten grundsätzlich in kleinen Gruppen von zehn bis zwanzig Teilnehmern, um eine individuelle fachgerechte Betreuung zu ermöglichen. Zusätzlich zu ihrer Filmausbildung belegen die Studenten auch Kurse in geistes- und sozialwissenschaftlichen Fächern. Die filmischen Abschlußarbeiten werden öffentlich im Kino des Colleges und in der Cinémathèque Sderot gezeigt. Die Kooperation mit der Cinémathèque ermöglicht dem College die Entwicklung von öffentlichen Programmen in einer Region des Landes, die mit kulturellen Institutionen nicht gerade gesegnet ist. Im Jahr 2002 fand zum ersten Mal ein Filmfestival in Kooperation von College, Cinémathèque und Stadtverwaltung statt, auf dem die Arbeiten von Studenten und Dozenten gezeigt wurden. Dieses Festival des Südens wird künftig zu einer Institution werden und auch internationale Teilnehmer haben. Studenten Die Studenten kommen aus allen ethnischen Gruppen Israels, was zu einem produktiven inter-ethnischen Austausch führt. Die Mehrheit stammt aus dem Süden des Landes, v. a. aus Kibbuzim. Finanzielle Unterstützung erhalten sie durch Stipendien und Preise. Von 70 Bewerbern werden im kommenden Semester 50 ihr Studium in Sapir beginnen. Lehrende Ein Teil der Dozenten ist am College festangestellt, ein größerer Teil unterrichtet gleichzeitig an anderen Colleges und Universitäten. Dadurch entsteht eine spontane Kooperation mit anderen filmwissenschaftlichen Institutionen in Israel. Technische Ausstattung Die technische Ausstattung der Abteilung ist ausgezeichnet. Ein großes Studio, technische Labors, besonders gut ausgestattete Tonstudios sowie Schneideräume ermöglichen allen Studenten die Arbeit mit der Kamera und an der Produktion ihrer Filme. Da dies kooperativ geschieht, werden hier im Kleinen bereits Berufsstrukturen erarbeitet, die nach dem Studienabschluß eine Rolle spielen und in der israelischen Filmwirtschaft und im Fernsehen gefragt sind. |

The Department of Film and Television Art of Sapir College is dedicated to both theoretical film studies and training in film practice. In its current form, it has only existed a few years. It is located in the southern part of the country, at the northern border of the Gaza Strip, in a region where Jews of North African descent, Bedouins, immigrants from Russia and Central Asia, and Palestinians live in immediate proximity to one another. This multiplicity is nonetheless largely isolated from the cultural life of the rest of the country. One of the goals behind the founding of the department is to help remedy this situation. A new cultural center is intended to bring the arts from the major cities to the periphery, dominated by developing cities and kibbutzim, and to build bridges connecting the different Israeli communities and the Palestinians in Gaza, and to support the development of regional cultures.
With the same intention and practically at the same time, the Cinémathèque of the South, an institution that intensively cooperates with Sapir College, was founded in the neighboring city Sderot. It had been planned to establish a media school in Gaza, with which close cooperation was envisioned. At the beginning of the second Intifada in Fall 2000, however, this project was put to a halt. Special attention is given in the training to the social aspects of the arts and the “cinema south”: films from Latin America, Africa, the so-called “Third World”, exile films, but also independent Israeli films. This concept follows in the heritage of Solana and Gettino´s term of a “third cinema”, but expands it at the same time: the south as the epitome of an oppressed, marginal and economically as well as culturally undeveloped region is opposed with the vision of an ethnically multiple territory with a cultural and political potential that develops through cultural production. The “cinema south” develops a new, confident image of the “South” and at the same time searches for a possible future in peace and autonomy. With the exception of Tel Aviv University, Sapir is the only institution of higher learning in Israel that offers film training leading up to an academic degree. Structure and Content of the Program The film training program at Sapir has as its goal not only the fundamental academic and practical training of the students, but also is concerned with the special political relevance of the media professions as a whole. Accordingly a focus on social and political questions is central in the framework of the training. Each semester is dedicated to a particular issue: like “Ethnic Groups in Southern Israel”, or “Society and Violence.” These issues are then theoretically examined by the students and serve as the basis for their practical projects. After three years of study, the first round of young directors, camera people, screenwriters and film technicians is now leaving the college with a degree. As an independent academic and practical program, the film study program can concentrate on a training in which film theory issues are balanced with concrete work on film projects. The students are required to concentrate their work on the region. The courses are divided into required courses and electives, whereby the students receive an overview of history of film, form, film language, film and television practice, as well as coverage of all relevant technical and practical issues. The students mostly work in small groups of ten to twenty in order to enable individual, qualified supervision. In addition to their film training, the students also take courses in the humanities and social sciences. The final film projects are screened publicly in the college´s own cinema and in the Cinémathèque Sderot. The cooperation with the cinémathèque makes it possible for the college to develop public programs in a region of the country not blessed with cultural institutions. In 2002, the college, cinémathèque and city government together hosted for the first time a film festival at which the work of both students and instructors was shown. This "Festival of the South" will in the future become an institution and include international participants as well. Students The students come from all ethnic groups of Israel, allowing for a productive inter-ethnic exchange. The majority comes from the south of the country, primarily from kibbutzim. Financial support is provided by means of scholarships and other awards. From a pool of seventy applicants fifty candidates have been selected to begin study in Sapir in the coming semester. Faculty Part of the faculty is permanently employed at the college, most also teach at other colleges and universities. This allows spontaneous cooperation to take place with other film studies institutions in Israel. Technical Resources The technical resources of the Department are excellent. A large studio, technical laboratories, very well equipped sound studios as well as editing rooms make it possible for all students to work with the camera and on the production of their films. Since this happens collectively, professional structures are already developed on a small scale; after the students complete their studies, these professional networks will play a role in the Israeli film industry and television. |
