Seit ihrer Gründung im Jahre 1996 ist die Filmabteilung bestrebt, akademische Grundsätze und Lehrmethoden für die Filmausbildung fruchtbar zu machen, die sich von denen anderer israelischer Ausbildungseinrichtungen unterscheiden. Die Abteilung für Film, auf einem idyllischen Campus ca. 30 km nördlich von Tel Aviv gelegen, ist Teil des größten akademischen Colleges in Israel. Sie ist in die Kunstschule von Beit Berl integriert, die seit mehr als 60 Jahren eines der bedeutendsten Zentren für die Künste in Israel darstellt. Die Einbeziehung der Filmabteilung in diesen Kontext steht für die Überzeugung, daß Film als Kunstform nicht isoliert steht, sondern als komplexe und organische Verbindung älterer Kunstformen – Theater, Literatur, Musik, Bewegung, Malerei, Fotografie – verstanden werden muß.
Die Freiheit des künstlerischen Ausdrucks, die intellektuelle Bildung der Studierenden und ihre Vorbereitung auf einen verantwortlichen Umgang mit ihrer zukünftigen Rolle als Künstler in einer Mediengesellschaft sind zentrale Momente der Ausbildung in Beit Berl. Dazu gehört aber auch das frühzeitige und systematische Heranführen der Studenten an den Langfilm als marktrelevantem Format. Die Abteilung wurde von Dr. Henry Unger gegründet. Unger, der seit 1973 an der philosophischen Fakultät der Tel Aviv University unterrichtet, leitet dort außerdem seit sieben Jahren das multidisziplinäre Programm der Fakultät der Künste und lehrt Philosophie, Erzähltheorie, Film und Kultursemiotik. Struktur und Inhalte der Ausbildung Die Filmausbildung dauert vier Jahre und wird mit einem Diplom abgeschlossen. Die Diplomprüfung umfaßt die erfolgreiche Präsentation von zwei Filmen von je 30 bis 50 Minuten Länge. Das gesamte Stundenvolumen beträgt etwa 160 Stunden, die reguläre Unterrichtsstunden wie Workshops umfassen. Da die Studierenden im letzten Jahr überwiegend mit der Arbeit an konkreten Filmprojekten befaßt sind, entfällt der Großteil des Unterrichts auf das erste bis dritte Studienjahr. Im Laufe der Ausbildung befassen sich alle Studierenden mit allen praktischen Aspekten des Filmemachens, vom Drehbuch bis zum Schnitt. In diesem Rahmen entstehen auch umfangreichere Filmprojekte mit 50 bis 80 Minuten Länge. Studenten Jedes Jahr werden aus etwa 50 Bewerbern 20 Studienanfänger ausgewählt. Diese Zahl wird im weiteren Studienverlauf auf 15 reduziert. Damit beträgt die Gesamtzahl der Filmstudenten jeweils ca. 65. Das Zulassungsverfahren besteht in einem achtstündigen Vorauswahlverfahren, in dem vor allem konzeptuelle Fähigkeiten getestet werden. Auf der nächsten Stufe werden in einem langen Auswahlgespräch Bewerber mit überdurchschnittlichen intellektuellen Fähigkeiten selektiert. Lehrende In der Filmabteilung von Beit Berl unterrichten herausragende Akademiker und Vertreter der israelischen Filmindustrie. Dazu gehören Yael Orgal, Yvonne Miklosh, Yoav Katz, Oshrit Bar-Haim, Anat Tzom, Dr. Henry Unger, Dan Geva, Etay Kaplinsky, Nissim Dayan, Reuven Cooperman, Aner Preminger, Kobi Niv, Nachman Ingbar, Dominique Levy Eisenberg, Gidon Yaron, Shmulik Duvdevani, Boaz Arad, Orna Ben-Dor, Amit Goren, Yoel Kaminsky, Tova Asher, Toby Hochstein, Doron Solomons, Yankol Goldwasser, Doron Tzabari, Yoav Kush, Dr. Ilan Avisar, Tamar Yaron, Avi Mugrabi, Uri Katzenstein, Dr. Yael Katzir, Prof. Emil Knebel, Dr. Moshe Zimmermann, Jorge Gurevich. Technische Ausstattung Die Filmabteilung verfügt über die technischen Möglichkeiten für eine reine “In-House”-Produktion. Durch die Verfügbarkeit der schuleigenen professionellen Ausrüstung können die Abschlußfilme weitgehend unbeeinflußt von finanziellen Einschränkungen realisiert werden. Produktionskosten für die Studentenfilme werden minimiert, da kein zusätzliches Equipment finanziert werden muß. Die niedrige Studentenzahl soll optimale Lernbedingungen in kleinen Arbeitsgruppen sicherstellen. So kann die Schule z. B. für je sechs Studenten eine professionelle Digitalkamera zur Verfügung stellen, auf je zwölf Studierende kommt eine AVID-Schneideeinheit. Auch Equipment für einige 16-mm-Produktionen pro Jahr ist verfügbar. |

Since its founding in 1996, the Film Department has been striving to make academic principles and instruction methods that differ from those of other Israeli educational institutions fruitful for film training. The Film Department, located on an idyllic campus ca. 30 km north of Tel Aviv, is part of the largest academic college in Israel. It is integrated in the art school of Beit Berl, which for more than 60 years has represented one of most significant centers for the arts in Israel. The integration of the film department in this context stands for the conviction that film does not stand alone as an art form, but must be understood as a complex and organic intersection of older art forms, like theater, literature, music, movement, painting, photography.
The freedom of artistic expression, the intellectual growth of the students and their preparation for a responsible utilization of their future role as artists in a media society are central moments of the training at Beit Berl. At the same time, this also includes the early and systematic introduction of the students to the feature film as a market relevant format. The Department was founded by Dr. Henry Unger. Unger, who has been teaching in the Philosophy Faculty at Tel Aviv University since 1973, also leads the multidisciplinary program of the Faculty of the Arts and teaches philosophy, narrative theory, film and cultural semiotics. Structure and Content of the Program The film-training program lasts three years, and leads up to the award of a diploma. The final examination is made up of the successful presentation of two films, thirty to fifty minutes in length. The total of 160 hours of classtime includes both regular hours of instruction and workshops. Since the students in the final year are mostly occupied with concrete film projects, most instruction takes place between the first and the third year. In the course of training, all students are introduced to the various practical aspects of film making, from screenwriting to editing. In this framework more extensive film projects are produced, fifty to eighty minutes in length. Students Every year, twenty incoming students are chosen from among fifty applicants. This number drops over the course of study to fifteen. The entire number of film students is sixty-five. The admissions process consists of an eight-hour selection process, where in particular conceptual ability is assessed. After the next step, a long interview, those candidates are selected who show above-average intellectual capacities. Faculty Excellent academics and representatives of the Israeli film industry teach in the Film Department at Beit Berl. Technical Resources The Film Department´s technical resources make purely “in house“ production possible. Due to the availability of the school´s own professional equipment, the final films can be realized largely free of financial limitations. Production costs for the student films are minimized since no additional equipment needs to be financed. The low number of students is intended to guarantee optimal learning conditions in small working groups. For example, for every six students there is one professional digital camera, for every twelve students an AVID editing unit. Equipment is even available to allow the production of a number of 16 mm productions each year. |
