The New Foundation for Cinema and Television

The New Foundation for Cinema and Television was founded in late 1993 by the Ministry of the Arts in order to encourage and promote the making of documentary, experimental, feature, and short films in Israel. Since then, the New Foundation has assisted in the production of over 130 original films, the vast majority of them documentaries. These films have been broadcast in Israel and around the world, have been screened at major film festivals, and have won many prestigious prizes. As such they have led the way to international recognition of Israel's documentary filmmaking industry. At the same time, the New Foundation has been involved in the teaching of cinema, the distribution and marketing of documentary films in Israel and overseas, in increasing the funding available to filmmakers, providing development grants to graduates of the country's film schools for the development of their first films, assisting the various film festivals held throughout Israel, and initiating and organizing workshops, seminars, and professional forums. The Foundation began an annual Documentary Film seminar in cooperation with the Documentary Filmmakers Forum and programming directors from Israel and abroad. The first seminar was held in partnership with externer Verweis/ external LinkZDF - Germany.

While staying in constant touch with the country's filmmakers, the New Foundation also plays an active role in increasing exposure to the documentary films and raising public awareness of this genre. It has established a tradition of premiere screenings in theaters throughout the country, special screenings for academics at universities, and documentary weekend mini-marathons in cooperation with the Tel Aviv Cinemateque for the general public.

In recent years, the New Foundation invested considerable efforts in opening a European "window of opportunity" for Israeli filmmakers. As a result of these efforts, the New Foundation was awarded a full partnership in the 'Medea' project, funded by the European Union for the support of international feature and documentary co-productions. In the three years the program has existed, 15 Israeli filmmakers received development grants and were invited to participate in international seminars.

The New Foundation is also busy diversifying its sources of income and developing new creative tracks. One of the key objectives we have set for ourselves is to direct funds and resources to feature-length documentary films, which will be screened for the first time in theaters. At the same time, we have reached an agreement with the Bracha Foundation to establish a framework for the production of short documentary films by young film-makers at the start of their careers.
